How should a ceramic coating be maintained?

Ceramic coating makes a car easier to clean and provides lasting protection, but it is not maintenance-free. How the vehicle is washed and cared for has a direct effect on its gloss, water behaviour and useful life.

Wash regularly and safely

Do not allow road salt, traffic film, bird droppings and other contamination to build up for long periods. A safe wash starts with a pre-wash or snow foam to loosen as much dirt as possible before contact washing.

Follow with a clean, soft wash mitt and a pH-neutral shampoo suitable for coated cars. The two-bucket method helps keep dirty rinse water away from the shampoo solution, reducing the chance of transferring grit back onto the paint.

• —Household detergents or strong chemicals not intended for car paint
• —Dirty sponges, chamois leathers and abrasive drying towels
• —Allowing bird droppings, insects or tree sap to remain on the paint
• —Leaving tap water to dry naturally in warm weather

Drying and water spots

Dry the vehicle with a clean, high-quality microfibre towel or a suitable filtered air blower. Letting water dry naturally can leave mineral deposits, particularly in hard-water areas. If water spots appear, deal with them promptly using a product that is safe for coated surfaces.

Remove contamination promptly

Bird droppings, insects and tree sap should be removed as soon as practical. Never scrape dried contamination from the paint. Soften it with water or an appropriate detailing product, then remove it gently. The coating provides useful resistance, but prolonged exposure can still leave a mark.

Maintenance products and inspections

Some coatings benefit from an occasional compatible silica-based topper or maintenance spray. These can refresh water behaviour and add protection, but using unsuitable products may leave residue or affect the finish. Follow the coating manufacturer's advice rather than layering on products at random.

A professional maintenance visit is also worthwhile. I can inspect the coating, remove bonded contamination and deal with mineral deposits or areas where performance has changed. Reduced beading often means contamination is masking the coating, not that the coating itself has failed.

Storage helps too

Sheltered parking reduces exposure to sun, rain, airborne pollutants and bird droppings. If you use a car cover, make sure both the cover and the paint are clean. Dirt trapped underneath can rub against the surface and cause marks.

Gentle, regular care is far better than neglect followed by an aggressive clean. Ceramic coating reduces the work involved, but it does not remove the need for care. Safe washing, compatible products and periodic professional maintenance will help preserve its gloss and protection for as long as possible.
